Nine girls and 24 boys between the ages of 8 and 16 competed recently in the annual Elk’s Hot Shot Basketball Skills Contest, including two girls and three boys from Pacific Grove. Competing were Reeve Grobecker, Maggie Snyder, Nicholas Boatman, Eric Boerner and Dean Boerner. Both girls, Reeve Grobecker and Maggie Snyder, placed in the final tally as did Dean Boerner.
They were competing against players representing the City of Marina, the Boys and Girls Club, Seaside PAL, the City of Seaside, the City of Monterey and the YMCA.

“I’ve been doing this now for about 27 years,” said Don Mothershead of City of Pacific Grove Recreation Department. “It’s a great competition.” Mothershead applauded the Elks Club for sponsoring the event. He said up until about 1990 it had been sponsored by the NBA and Pepsi, but they dropped the sponsorship back then because of a recession. The Elks “stepped up to the plate” and have been sponsoring it ever since.

The competition is “Peninsula only” and Mothershead networks with the other organizations to put the event together.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
