• Baseball: Pacific Grove will take on Soledad in Battle of MTAL unbeatens

Pacific Grove opened the season with an overall record of 8-1 before heading to Sacramento to take part in the Boras Classic. Even though the Breakers went 1-3 and finished in 14th place at the tournament, they are still 5-0 in the Mission Trail Athletic League.

The Breakers, led by seniors Chris Fife and Anthony Coppla, are one of two undefeated teams left in the MTAL. The other is Soledad, who comes into Tuesday’s game with the Breakers, on an 8 game winning streak and an overall record of 13-2.

The Aztecs are led on offense by Nathaniel Villareal and Jordan Morrison. Villareal leads the team with 20 RBI’s, and 12 extra base hits, while Morrison leads the team in hits, with 24, and is second in RBI’s, with 19.

While both teams are winning games, they seem to be doing it in different ways. The Breakers have given up an MTAL low 44 runs on the season, while scoring 71. Eight of the Breakers thirteen games have been decided by 3 runs or less. The Breakers have also played in 5 games that went into extra innings, winning 3 of them.

Soledad has scored an MTAL high 153 runs on the season, while giving up 74. Only two of the Aztecs fifteen games were decided by 3 runs or less. The Aztecs have also scored at least 9 runs in 12 of their games, with them all being victories. In their recent 8 game win streak, they have scored 10 runs in every game and outscored their opponents by a combined score of 102-39.

Last year though, the Aztecs started off very similarly to this year. They went 12-0 to start the season, beating up on teams. But they then ran into the Breakers, who defeated them 4-0, and 14-5 in back to back games.

One thing that helped the Aztecs pull off their 8 game win streak, is the teams that they faced. They did what they were supposed to do and beat the teams they played. However, six of their wins came against Greenfield, King City, and Gonzales, who have a combined 4-18 record in the MTAL.

In what should be a good game between the only undefeated teams left in the MTAL, Pacific Grove (9-4, 5-0) will travel to Soledad (13-2, 6-0) on Tuesday, April 14, 2015, with the game starting at 4:00 p.m.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm.
