“It felt great,” senior Chris Fife said of the Breakers winning their first game in two tries.

Pacific Grove followed up a 5-2 road loss to Soledad on Tuesday, with a 9-1 victory at home on Thursday afternoon. [04-16-15]

“We were disappointed after the last game [against Soledad]. We didn’t play a very good game and should have played better,” Fife said. “Yesterday, we definitely felt anger about the game [on Tuesday], and we wanted this one bad.”

The Breakers played like a team who wanted it, as they came out swinging early. Chris Fife, Eric Boerner, Dan Harrington, and James Donlan all scored runs in the first inning.

Pacific Grove’s scoring barrage continued into the second inning, when Colton Moore scored off the Eric Boerner ground ball. Fife then made maybe one of the best plays of the year by catching the Aztecs off guard and stealing home to put the Breakers up 6-0.

Pitching for the Breakers was Nic Boatman, who was marvelous on the mound. After giving up 3 hits and 1 run in the first inning, Boatman clamped down and gave up only 2 hits and 0 runs over the next 6 innings. He retired three straight batters in four of the seven innings he pitched.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Breakers would add 3 more runs for insurance. Chris Fife got the inning going with a bunt, in which he beat out the throw, making it to first. Fife then scored off of a Kacee Takasaki double. After an Anthony Coppla single moved Takasaki to third, Takasaki would score off a wild pitch when the Soledad catcher tried to tag him and dropped the ball. Three batters later, Andrew Steward would knock in Coppla off a liner to right field.

“Tuesday’s game we didn’t capitalize on our opportunities,” Fife said. “Today we did a better job of that.”

In describing the importance of knocking Soledad from the MTAL unbeaten’s, Fife said that “it’s huge, because all the games matter. Even though it’s not late in the season, if we would have lost this game, it could have affected whether or not we ended up losing the league.”

After the huge victory by the Breakers, there is a three way tie atop the MTAL, with Pacific Grove, Carmel, and Soledad all having one league loss.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
