• Boys’ Basketball Drops First League Game

Pacific Grove lost their first MTAL game of the season to rival Carmel on Wednesday night, 45-36 [01-14-15].

The Breakers couldn’t have had a worse start to the game than they did. Carmel came out of the gates on fire and took a quick 10-0 lead at home before the Breakers were able to score any points. The Padres didn’t let up, as the onslaught continued into the second quarter. After a Josh Wren free throw brought the Breakers within six, Camel drained three consecutive 3-pointers, including one at the buzzer to take a commanding 27-12 half time lead.

One reason the Breakers only put up 12 first half points and found themselves in a 15 point half time deficit, was because they went 4-14 from the free throw line. Continuously, the Breakers were able to get in the lane and get fouled, but they couldn’t take advantage of it.

To start the third quarter, Uche Ebo was able to drive strong to the hole and convert the layup for the first Breakers points since 5:00 minutes left in the second quarter. A 9 point third quarter from sophomore Brad Sendell helped the Breakers cut their half time deficit in half going into the fourth quarter.

The Breakers went on a 5-0 run to start the fourth to make it a three point game. Carmel responded, by hitting a jumper with 4:05 left in the game to extend the lead back up to 37-32. Sendell then was able to make a spinning shot, to cut the lead back down to three. That would be as close as Pacific Grove would get though, as Carmel was able to close out the last minute of the game on an 8-2 run. The Padres improved to 3-0 in league play, while the Breakers fell to 2-1.

Just like the first half, free throws in the second half were an issue for the Breakers as well. They made 1 of 6 in the second half and went 5 for 20 overall in their 9 point loss.

Brad Sendell had a team high 17 points, while Josh Wren added 7 in the Breakers loss.

Pacific Grove (7-4, 2-1) will next play at home against Soledad (1-6, 1-2) on Friday, January 16, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
