• Boys Basketball: Sendell and Ersek Lead the Breakers over Stevenson

    – Jon Charron –

The emotion was strong for the Breakers after they ran away with their eighth straight win on Thursday night against Stevenson. “It was a really big win for us. A confidence builder,” sophomore Brad Sendell exclaimed after they wrapped up the 59-35 victory. It was easy to see why Sendell and the rest of the team was so excited. The Breakers only have two games left, and with a win next week, they will guarantee at least a share of the MTAL championship.

With the game knotted at 6-6 and only 2:45 left in the first quarter, Erol Ersok quickly turned things in favor of the Breakers when he drained three straight 3-pointers to close out the quarter.

The Breakers were able to take a 15-6 lead into the second quarter and never looked back. Defensively, the intensity was the same as it has been since their winning streak started. They gave up only 13 points in the first half.

On the offensive side, it was the 3-pointer that continued to fall. Sendell, who hit one 3-pointer early in the first quarter, hit two more in the second, to give the Breakers seven 3-pointers in the first half.

Sendell continued his hot shooting stroke into the third quarter, making two more three’s, and converting an almost impossible three point play. The Breakers extended their lead to 21 at the end of three quarters.

This game was completely different from the last time they played, when the Breakers had to overcome a 10 point deficit, before ultimately winning. Pacific Grove made 10 three-pointers and ended up winning by 25 points in this go round.

Olin Parker, who is a three point machine, was nowhere to be found for the Pirates, as Erol Ersok shadowed him almost the entire game. Ersok has been a huge part of the Breakers eight game win streak. “He not only scores for us, but he’s a great defender. [He’s] super long and always guards the other teams’ best player,” Sendell said of Ersok’s all-around importance to the Breakers success. Sendell continued to praise Ersok’s efforts, by saying that “we really need him, and he’s a great player.”

Brad Sendell finished with 26 points, while Erol Ersok had 15. Josh Wren added 8 points and Uche Ebo had a team high 8 rebounds for the Breakers.

Pacific Grove (16-5, 11-1) will next play in their final home game of the season against Gonzales (7-13, 4-7) on Monday, February 16, 2015 at 7:00 p.m.

Last time these two teams met, Pacific Grove defeated Gonzales 67-40.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
