• Boys Basketball: Seniors Lead the Way for Breakers in Home Finale

    – Jon Charron –

In their last regular season home game of the year, the Breakers looked every bit like a championship team, as they easily handled Gonzales 56-20 on Monday night. [02-16-15]

It was a balanced team effort from top to bottom for the Breakers, with eleven different players scoring. “Everyone is part of it. Everyone has one goal now, and everyone got in on it,” John Buttrey said about his teams’ balanced attack.

Renzon Morata, Josh Wren, and John Buttrey, the only seniors on the Breakers squad, all played in their last regular season home game together. “It came a lot faster than I thought it would,” Buttrey said after their victory. “It felt great and everyone honored us well.”

The three seniors got things going early for the Breakers, as Morata found Buttrey for a 3-point basket to put Pacific Grove up 3-0. A Morata steal then led to a Josh Wren basket and free throw, to complete the three point play for a 6-0 Breakers lead. Pacific Grove led 11-0 with :59 seconds left in the first quarter, before Gonzales finally found their first 2 points of the game. After a Zack Miller block, the Breakers would go down the court, where Buttrey drained his second 3-pointer of the quarter to put them up 14-2.

Pacific Grove kept the defensive pressure on in the second quarter, as they picked up three steals, to give them eleven in the first half. Buttrey, who led the Breakers with 13 points in the game, scored 10 of them in the first half alone. “All I can do is play to my potential, and I think I did that,” Buttrey said of his performance against the Spartans.

To start the third quarter, Pacific Grove had a 27-11 lead over the Spartans and looked to close out the game with a strong third quarter. Josh Wren kept the scoring going for the Breakers, when on an in-bounds pass, he made a tough basket. Wren finished with 5 points for the game. Erol Ersek wouldn’t be outdone in the highlight reel though. After stealing the ball at mid court, Ersek raced down the court and slammed it home, to put the Breakers up 33-11. To close out the quarter, Chip Wagner caught the pass from Buttrey and laid it in, to take a commanding 42-15 lead into the fourth quarter.

John Buttrey, #30, watches as he sinks his lone free throw against Gonzales in the third quarter.

After having trouble closing out games early in the season, the Breakers have had no troubles of that lately. They extended their 27 point lead to 36 by the end of the game, to give themselves their ninth straight win.

With the victory, the Breakers are guaranteed at least a share of first place in the MTAL.

John Buttrey led the team with 13 points and 7 rebounds. Jake Merenda had 8 points, while Sam Fenstermaker added 4 points and 4 steals in the Breakers victory.

Pacific Grove (17-5, 12-1) will play in their final regular season game of the season on the road against Marina (4-17, 3-9) on Monday, February 18, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played at Seaside High School.

Last time these two teams met, Pacific Grove defeated Marina 68-25. Erol Ersek had a game high 19 points in that game.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
