• Boys’ Basketball Team Bounces Back Against Soledad

    – Jon Charron –

Three players scored in double digits for Pacific Grove as they defeated Soledad 56-41 on Friday night [01-16-15].

The Aztecs had five 3-pointers in the first half to help them keep pace with the Breakers. After falling behind 17-14 in the second quarter, Brad Sendell kick started a Breakers 8-0 run when he got a steal and was able to get to free throw line, making 1 of 2. Noah Dalhamer was then able to give the Breakers their first lead of the game since the beginning of the second quarter by cleaning up the Sendell miss. The 3’s were key for the Aztecs late in the second quarter when they had back to back baskets, including a buzzer beater, to give Soledad a 23-22 half time lead.

Erol Ersek, who was held scoreless in the first half, scored his first basket of the game early in the third quarter to put the Breakers up 26-23. After Soledad was able to cut the deficit to one, Pacific Grove went on a 12-3 run to close the quarter, taking a 41-33 lead into the fourth quarter.

John Buttrey playing in his first game of the season since breaking his hand in the “Shoe Game,” went 1 for 2 from the free throw line and had 1 assist.

While Buttrey may have looked a little rusty at times, Breakers head coach Dan Powers said that “he gave us a good spark and as he gets more and more in to it he’ll get better.” Powers tacked on, “He’s a good basketball player and we need him,” adding, “He’s our heart and soul.”

Chip Wagner, who had a team high 13 points for the Breakers, scored 8 points in the fourth quarter. Pacific Grove started the quarter with a 9 point lead, but by the end of the quarter, they were able to close out the game with a 15 point advantage. It was their largest victory since their 51 point victory over Greenfield in the league opener.

Coach Powers did say it was nice not losing a lead or having to come back, but “We’re still learning and we still need to get better at it. We had some moments where we weren’t as good as we could have been.”

Erol Ersek chipped in 12 points, while Brad Sendell added 11.

Pacific Grove (8-4, 3-1) will next play at home against Monterey (1-3, 8-7) on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 7:00 p.m

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
