• Breakers Lose a Tight One to Carmel in Girls Hoops

Pacific Grove dropped their second league game of the season on Wednesday night, as they lost to rival Carmel in a nail biter 34-32 [01-14-15].

Carmel started out the game strong, with a 7-2 lead, but the Breakers were able to make it 9-6 after a Jessica Matthews basket with 3 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Breakers got a basket from Matthews and a steal and basket from Allie Patton to put themselves in front 10-9. After a basket from Abby Burnell put the Breakers up 12-11, Carmel went on a 6-1 run to close the second quarter and take a 17-13 lead into the half.

Jessica Matthews and the Breakers quickly got back in it to start the third quarter. Matthews got a steal and basket, and then following another Padres turnover, Matthews was able to score two more points to knot the game up at 17-17. Another basket by Matthews gave the Breakers a 19-17 lead midway through the quarter. Carmel again though, would close the quarter strong. After falling down 20-18, the Padres scored six straight points to go back up 24-20.

Matthews tried to keep the Breakers in it as she scored 8 fourth quarter points for the Breakers. With 1:30 left in the game, Matthews grabbed the rebound and drew a foul. She went to line and made 1 of 2 to cut the lead to two points. Carmel was able to put the lead back up to 34-30 after a basket with 30 seconds left in the game. Following a Mackenzie Bell miss, Matthews was able to coral the rebound and score the basket, making it a 34-32 game with 13 seconds left. The Breakers quickly fouled Carmel to bring them to the line for a one and one. The Padres missed the free throw giving the Breakers one last chance. After the ball was knocked out of bounds, Mackenzie Bell inbounded the ball from the baseline to Lela Hautau, who was then fouled with less than 1 second left in the game. Hautau missed the free throw long off the back of the rim and Carmel was able to secure the 2 point victory and stay undefeated in league play.

Jessica Matthews scored 19 points, while Allie Patton had 5 points and 6 steals in the Breakers loss.

The Breakers now find themselves sitting in fifth place in the MTAL, with 11 games to play.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
