• Carmel Schools To Get New Superintendent

Following a series of all-day candidate interviews last Friday and Saturday, the Carmel Unified School District Board of Trustees has selected Scott Laurence as the finalist to replace retiring Superintendent Marvin Biasotti.  Mr. Laurence is currently the Superintendent of the San Mateo Union High School District.  Prior to that, Mr. Laurence had a distinguished career with the Palo Alto Unified School District as a teacher, principal, and District administrator.

Mr. Laurence was selected as the finalist from an outstanding field of candidates. The Board will conduct a site visit with other members of the Carmel Unified community to San Mateo Union High School District on Monday, March 23rd. Following a positive site visit and successful contract negotiations, the Board expects to take action to confirm an offer of employment to Mr. Laurence at its April 1, 2015 regularly scheduled Board meeting.

Carmel Unified Board President Rita Patel stated:  “Scott Laurence’s experience and personal qualities are exactly what the Board and our community stakeholders wanted to see in the next leader of Carmel Unified.  For the past 15 years, Marvin Biasotti has led our school district on its path to become one of the top school districts in California and the nation. We look forward to the next chapter under the stewardship of Mr. Laurence.

“Mr. Laurence is an educational leader who has a passion for helping all students achieve their full potential. He has been the catalyst for educational reforms at San Mateo that have made a positive difference in the lives of thousands of children, whether they are college bound or interested in immediate career opportunities.   The Board found Mr. Laurence to be the best overall candidate in all areas of school district leadership, including curriculum and instruction, budget development, fiscal oversight, facilities improvement, and human resources. He is well known and respected as a student-centered leader who is highly visible, approachable, and accessible.  We look forward to his joining the Carmel Unified family as our new Superintendent.”

Mr. Laurence added:  “I am both humbled and extremely gratified to have been selected for this incredible opportunity by Carmel Unified.  My entire career has been focused on doing what’s best for children.  I look forward to continuing to pursue academic excellence, for all children, at Carmel Unified. This is an exciting opportunity, and I am looking forward to meeting the community.”

Mr. Laurence has a B.A. in history and economics and an M.A. in Eeducation from Stanford University.  He started his career at Palo Alto High School as a history and social studies teacher where he taught for 13 years.  He also served as the principal at both Gunn High School and Palo Alto High School for a combined seven years, before he was selected to work in the Palo Alto Unified District Office as Assistant Superintendent in 2007.  Since 2009, Mr. Laurence has served as the Superintendent of the San Mateo Union High School District.

Scott resides in San Martin with his wife, Kathie, who serves as an assistant principal at Palo Alto High School.  They have two children, Tucker, a Lewis and Clark graduate who is working in the special education field in Palo Alto Unified, and Cody, who is currently attending De Anza Community College, working toward a computer-based career.
