• Escrow Closes on the Golden State Theatre

Eric and Lori Lochtefeld closed escrow today, Sept. 30, 2014, on the Golden State Theatre

Eric and Lori Lochtefeld announced that they have successfully closed escrow and are the proud new owners of the historic Golden State Theatre in downtown Monterey. The couple entered escrow the buy the theatre in May from previous owner Warren Dewey. The downtown Monterey property includes a 1000 seat theatre, 6000 square feet of additional event/exhibit space and five storefronts currently occupied by three restaurants and two retail stores.

In 2010, the Lochtefelds bought their first historic theatre in downtown Redwood City, the Fox Theater, and have been a driving force behind the revitalization of that now booming City. They plan to tap their experience to expand upon the rich tradition of live entertainment in Monterey, utilizing the venue for live music, comedy shows, theatrical performances, film festivals, lecture series, and private events.

The Lochtefelds took the untraditional approach of renting and operating the venue during escrow. “Our objective in renting the theater while in escrow,” says Lori Lochtefeld, “was to familiarize ourselves with the theater, make some needed production upgrades, and to test market shows to see what type of entertainment the community of Monterey wants to see, all with the hope of hitting the ground running once we became the owners.”

The Lochtefelds are pleased to announce a fantastic Fall/Winter line-up featuring comedian Paula Poundstone Oct. 3, A Toast To The Rat Pack Oct. 26, comedian Dana Carvey Nov. 14, The Temptations on Nov. 21, a two weekend run of the musical Anything Goes Nov. 29 thru Dec. 7, the Peninsula Ballet’s Nutcracker December 13 and 14 and world class comedian Brian Regan on February 15.

In its biggest booking news yet, the Lochtefeld’s have contracted with 50 year-old theater company Broadway By The Bay to expand their annual multi-show theatrical productions to Monterey. Starting this November with the musical “Anything Goes,” Monterey residents will be able to purchase season subscriptions or individual tickets to a 2015 musical run that includes “Les Miserables” (March 28 thru April 5), “My Fair Lady” (June 27 thru July 5), “West Side Story” (Sept. 5 thru Sept. 13), and “Kiss Me Kate” (Nov. 28 thru Dec. 6).

“We could not be more pleased to be the new owners of the Golden State Theatre,” says Eric Lochtefeld, “we promise to work our tails off until Monterey residents feel proud to call our theatre their favorite venue.”

City Manager Michael McCarthy says, “Eric and Lori have a stellar venue in the heart of Silicon Valley, and we are very pleased they are bringing their talents in producing and hosting shows to our beautiful Golden State Theatre. Their contribution will be another vital piece to the revitalization of downtown, and a perfect opportunity to once again showcase our historic theatre.”
