• Softball: Carmel Hands Pacific Grove its Fourth Straight Loss

    – Jon Charron –

Pacific Grove played one of their better games of the season against Carmel on Thursday night. However, the Padres were able to hold off the Breakers for a 13-8 victory. [04-16-15]

Through two innings of play, the two teams were locked in a 0-0 tie. In the top of the third though, Carmel would break the tie and take a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the third with runners on first and second, freshman Danielle Pasquariello hit a rocket to left field for a triple, scoring both runners for the Breakers to take a 2-1 lead. Pasquariello would then score off of a Lala Hautau single to right field.

Errors though, would haunt the Breakers in the fourth. After getting two outs to start the inning, Sofia Baker struck out the Carmel batter for the third out. However, the ball was dropped and the runner was able to safely make it to first. A walk and fielding error then loaded the bases for Baylee Nottenkamper, who then hit a grand slam, putting the Padres back in front 5-3.

The Breakers would then cut the Padres lead to 1 run in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Diana Hughes on second, Victoria Harris hit a ground ball to third, but after a throwing error to first, Hughes would turn third and score for the Breakers.

After shutting down Carmel in the top half of the fifth, the Breakers would tie the game up at 5-5 from Pasquariello run.

Carmel would then turn it on and score 8 runs over the next two innings. Taking a 13-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh.

With two runners on, Lala Hautau tried to help Pacific Grove make a comeback, when she hit a three-run home run. That would be all the Breakers would score, as Carmel would retire three of the next four batters to hold on for the victory.

Danielle Pasquariello went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI’s and scored 3 runs, while Lala Hautau went 2 for 3 with 4 RBI’s, a homerun, and scored 1 run in the Breakers loss.

    Pacific Grove (4-14, 1-5) will next play at Soledad (8-7-1, 2-4) on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 4:30 p.m.

Last time these two teams met, the Breakers lost a close one 7-6.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
