• Softball: Pacific Grove loses second straight to Monterey

    – Jon Charron –

A 7-0 lead by Monterey after two innings was too much for Pacific Grove to overcome, as they lost 12-7 on Thursday night [03-12-15].

The Toreadors came out swinging right out of the gates. With runners on second and third, Gina Bruno hit a rocket in deep center field to bring in the first two runs of the game, while picking up a triple herself.

After the Breakers went down one, two, three, in their first at bats of the game, Monterey put 4 more runs on the board, to go up 7-0. In the bottom of the second, freshman Danielle Pasquariello got things started for the Breakers by drawing a walk. Rachel Consiglio then got a base hit over the shortstop.

Danielle Pasquariello went 3 for 3, scored 2 runs, had 3 RBIs, including an in the park home run for PG in their loss to Monterey

After Pasquariello stole third, she scored on a wild pitch, giving the Breakers their first run of the game. Diana Hughes then hit the RBI single, scoring Consiglio, to cut the Toreadors lead to 7-2 after two innings of play.

Every time the Breakers put runs on the board though, Monterey would come back with a response. The Breakers had four errors on the night, but every one led to a run for Monterey. “We just got to clean up our defense,” Pacific Grove head coach Sal Lucido said. “We have the players, we just have to make some adjustments.”

The Breakers were also thrown out on a couple of close calls while running the bases, potentially costing them some more runs. In the bottom of the third inning, Pasquariello hit a hard grounder that drove in Victoria Harris, but as Christina Lucido tried to get back to third, she was thrown out by the Monterey catcher.

After Monterey increased their lead to 9-3, Lala Hautau started the bottom of the fifth off with a hard hit over the center fielders head to pick up a triple.Victoria Harris, who had a good game for the Breakers as well, drove in Hautau after getting a base hit. With Lucido at the plate, Harris tried to steal second, but was gunned down by the Monterey catcher. Lucido then hit a double and eventually scored after Pasquariello hit a single up the middle.

“We hit the ball well tonight, we had 13 hits they had 11,” coach Lucido said of his teams hitting. In the end though, it wasn’t enough. Harris would pick up her second RBI of the game in the bottom of the sixth and Pasquariello would hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh. Monterey though, was up to much as they got the last two outs and held on to a 12-7 victory.

Danielle Pasquariello led the Breakers, going 3 for 3, scored 2 runs, had 3 RBI’s and hit a home run. “She took some really good swings tonight and she did a good job,” Lucido said of her performance.

Victoria Harris went 3 for 4, scored a run and had 2 RBI’s for the Breakers.

Pacific Grove (2-2) will next play in the Charlie Miguel Tournament in San Jose on Saturday, March 14, 2015.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
