• Softball: Pacific Grove Rallies from 9 Down to Beat North Monterey County

    – Jon Charron –

Two games into the season, and two wins for the Pacific Grove softball team. The Breakers had a great come from behind victory on Friday night against North Monterey County. Winning the game 14-11. [03-06-15]

After the top of the fourth inning had concluded, the Breakers found themselves in a deep hole. They trailed the North Monterey County Condors by a score of 9-0.

“The Kids never gave up,” Breakers head coach Sal Lucido said after the game. “The hitting, we work on every day. And we knew that if we made adjustments to their pitching, we could start hitting them.” That is exactly what Pacific Grove did. Abby Burnell kick started the Breakers rally with a base hit. Two batters later, Burnell would score the first run of the game for the Breakers, when left fielder Lala Hautau hit a grounder up the middle.

After a Rachel Consiglio hit loaded the bases, Caroline Gruber took the walk, allowing Danielle Pasquariello to score. Diana Hughes then chipped it right in front of home plate, but Lala Hautau was able to slide in under the tag, cutting the Condor lead to 9-3.

The Breakers had their first six batters reach base safely in the bottom of the fourth inning, before finally getting their first out. After the Sophie Lowell strike out, Victoria Harris received a walk, giving the Breakers another run. Christina Lucido then followed that up with a base hit of her own, to pull the Breakers within 9-5. After an Abby Burnell fly out to center field, Danielle Pasquariello hit a two run RBI single to give the Breakers 7 straight runs. Lala Hautau would close out the fourth inning scoring spree by hitting a blooper over the shortstop, knocking in Lucido and Pasquariello.

After a nine run bottom of the fourth by Pacific Grove, they were back in the game, now with it all tied up at 9-9.

Sofia Baker now just needed to hold the Condors from scoring, and allow her offense to put up some more runs. Baker sat down the North Monterey County batters in a nice one, two, three fashion. Her defense though, especially shortstop Christina Lucido, made two great defensive stops in the top of the fifth. Lucido had a diving catch coming towards second, and then raced across second and gunned the batter out at first.

To lead off the bottom of the fifth for the Breakers was Caroline Gruber. Gruber wasted no time in getting the Breakers back in scoring position, as she ripped a double down the right field line. With runners on first and third, Sophie Lowell hit a hard grounder to short, who couldn’t handle it, bringing in Gruber for the Breakers first lead of the night.

After an Abby Burnell RBI single, Daniella Pasquarillo hit a rocket into the center field, driving in her third run of the game. Putting the Breakers up 13-9. They would score one more run off a Rachel Consiglio RBI.

Going into the seventh inning, the Breakers had a five run lead and only needed three outs. The Condors though, would not give up that easily, as they hit a triple down the left field line. Then they followed that up with a sacrifice fly to bring them within four. The next batter hit another rocket down the left field line and she raced around the bases for an in the park home run. Sofia Baker though, would find a way to get the next two batters out, and Pacific Grove would hold on to the 14-11 victory.

Breakers coach Sal Lucido thought that his team played fairly good defense and “[Baker] pitched really well. She threw a lot of strikes and kept her composure, which is hard to do for a freshman.” Overall, coach Lucido, who has five freshman on his team, said “I’m proud of the kids. We have so much room for improvement and were doing so well.” Adding, “We’re 2-0.”

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
