• Softball: Pacific Grove’s Late Rally Falls Short against Soledad

    – Jon Charron –

“To put a positive spin on it, we made a comeback.” Pacific Grove coach head coach Sal Lucido said about his teams’ tough 7-6 loss to Soledad on Thursday night [03-19-15].

The Breakers found themselves on the losing side for their fourth straight game. After starting 2-0 on the season, Pacific Grove ran into three really tough teams, in Notre Dame, Monterey, and rival Carmel. Soledad, who went 5-20 overall last season and 0-12 in MTAL play, has already matched last season’s win total. Soledad is now 5-4-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.

“Soledad is a good team, and they’ve improved from previous years,” Lucido said. “Their pitcher pitched very well and their catcher caught very well.”

Soledad got off to a quick start and scored the first run of the game in the top of the first. Pacific Grove responded in the bottom of the second, when Samantha Crowley’s base hit scored Lela Hautau to tie the game up at 1-1.

Again though, the Breakers found themselves in an early hole. The Aztecs put up four more runs in the top of the third to take a 5-1 lead. Lucido put it simply about his teams early game struggles. “We need to score more runs in the early innings, so that it’s not such a climb back.”

It sounds simple, but in their last five games they have found themselves on an uphill climb after the second inning.

The Breakers were able to cut the Aztec lead to 2 in the bottom of the fifth, after an Abby Burnell sacrifice fly scored Christina Lucido.

However, Soledad struck right back in the top of the sixth by scoring 2 runs to increase their lead to 7-3.

Pacific Grove didn’t quit, as they were able to score 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Natalie Baratashvili, who was pinch running, scored off of the RBI single from Samantha Crowley. Two batters later, Christina Lucido hit a double that scored Diana Hughes.

In the top of the seventh, Pacific Grove got a big boost from freshmen catcher Rachel Consiglio. With runners on second and third and no outs, Sophie Lowell threw a pitch into the dirt. Consiglio trapped the ball and gunned out the runner on third, who tried to get back after starting home. Sofia Baker returned to the mound and got the next two outs to end the top half of the inning with no damage done.

“Our young pitching is getting better,” Lucido said his pitching staff. Lucido, also had nothing but good words for his newly installed catcher. “She’s a freshman as well [as Baker] and she did a very good job.”

To start the bottom of the seventh, Danielle Pasquariello and Lala Hautau grounded out. Then things started to happen for the Breakers. Lela Hautau drove one to right field that the fielder could not handle, allowing her to get to second base. Rachel Consiglio then came up and struck out, but after the catcher dropped the ball, she ran towards first. The first baseman couldn’t handle the catchers throw, the right fielder then grabbed the ball and threw it to the first baseman, who got hit in the face.

Hautau would score on the play and Consiglio would advance to second. Diana Hughes came to the plate and hit a grounder to the second baseman, who could not handle it. With runners on first and third, Samantha Crowley, who already had 2 RBI’s, came to the plate. Crowley popped up to first base, ending what was a dramatic ending to the game.

“We’re taking strides forward,” Lucido said. “And our defense played fairly well.” Adding, “All we can do is go up.”

The Breakers are a very young team, and have played fairly well for the lack of experience. They started a freshman at pitcher, catcher, second, and third base. The only seniors on the roster are center fielder Victoria Harris and right fielder Lela Hautau.

Samantha Crowley went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s, Christina Lucido went 2 for 3 with an RBI and scored a run. Lela Hautau also added 2 runs for the Breakers in their loss.

This is the Heal the Bay Beach Report Card for Monterey Peninsula beaches, which reports water quality grades, or when relevant, weather advisories. An A to F grade is assigned based on the health risks of swimming or surfing at that location. Look at the "dry" grade for all days except those "wet" days during and within 3 days after a rainstorm. Click here for more information on the Beach Report Card. Click the name of the beach when it pops up for more details, or choose a beach below.
